Isn’t serendipity the most wonderful of words? Meaning a happy accident or pleasant coincidence, the word itself just makes me smile. And serendipitous is exactly the way I’d describe how we wound up in the sleepy town of Milna on Brač Island, Croatia.

We’d intended to spend another week in Split, but when our Airbnb host unexpectedly upped the nightly price of the house, I decided we weren’t staying simply on principle. I think Jer was sort of annoyed with this decision because he really liked Split, and I was now forcing him to pack up all our shit, take a ferry to Brač Island, then take a taxi from the ferry port around the island to teeny tiny Milna.

Well, I certainly showed him! I’m kidding. (Ok, but not really.)

I was definitely right on this one. The town of Milna is absolutely magical. With only 833 residents, there’s a je ne sais quoi to the place. Without a single bar or nightclub in town, it’s really the polar opposite of Split, except that they’re both smack on the sea.

Booking an Airbnb with 3 days notice in a tiny town on an island in the Adriatic Sea doesn’t seem like a recipe for success, but that’s not the case here. Our house is BOMB. The photos did NOT do it justice and I even suggested to the owners (in the nicest way possible) that they are selling themselves so so so short.

I mean, in our yard alone we have olive trees, pomegranate trees, lemon trees, orange trees, fig trees, grape vines, and bougainvillea. Within 15 minutes of arrival, a plate of fresh from the garden figs had been delivered, which we drizzled with honey and ate on the terrace in the sunshine, spying on our hillside neighbors.

After unpacking and a quick check of Instagram, we headed out in the direction of a sea.

It took us all of 10 minutes to get to the harbor, with 5 of those minutes spent watching Lilly make friends with a sweet papillon pup named Shakira. During this walk, I also took approximately 300 photos (I’m a sucker for derelict buildings, what can I say?!).

Finally, we watched the setting sun slowly turn the town orange and the moutains lavender before walking back home grinning from ear to ear at our fantastic stroke of travel luck.
