One of the negative things about traveling is that you can never go everywhere, no matter how much you may want to. While we didn’t get to spend much time in Slovakia, we did make a point to get to Bratislava because we’d heard such amazing things about it.
The day we decided to go the weather was just not cooperating. It was chilly and overcast, but once we drove into Bratislava, things were looking up. Despite the clouds, we loved it here!
We parked and immediately found a pink paradise, the Primatial Palace. Anytime I see a pink building, I get overly excited, and this one was beautifully detailed.
We walked on through a little alleyway behindt he Palace and popped out in the center of Old Town.
One of the first things you’ll notice about the city is Bratislava Castle, which dominates the skyline. There are even little nods to the castle all over town. My favorite was a gorgeous glass model in the window of a candy shop!
Since it was Sunday, there were several little markets to explore, with stall owners willing to brave the rain and chill. My mom found the most wonderful fall scented wreath at the promenade market in front of the Slovak National Theatre. The whole promenade area was the best place to stroll and take in the sights.
When it started to get too drizzly for us, we ducked into cafes for coffee and ice cream, and hid under awnings with delicious honey cake.
Before we drove back to Vienna, we made a small pit stop outside Bratislava. There’s a very odd little “sculpture garden” which is essentially a patch of rocks in the middle of a field at the end of a dirt road. However, this spot is where Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia meet. There’s this handy little pillar to mark the spot.
I wouldn’t recommend going very far out of your way to see this, but if you’re already in Bratislava (which you need to be, because it’s AWESOME), but it was only 20 minutes for us, and if you’re into cheesy stuff like I am, you’ll dig it!
Looks awesome! I’m going to be in the Balkans in a couple of weeks and this is just too far off of my itinerary to plan a trip there, but it looks beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
